Finding the Ever After: How a Hospital Stay Led to a Masterpiece

When creative genius meets profound personal challenge, the resulting work often achieves an astonishing depth and resonance. For producer James Ellis Ford, this intersection happened while he was undergoing treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Amidst the isolation of the hospital ward, Ford didn’t just find solace; he found a powerful outlet, crafting a deeply moving body of work that explores the delicate beauty of existence.

This creative burst resulted in his second solo album, Lost In Another World, which was released on August 14th via Domino. The latest preview of this expansive sound is the hypnotic single, ‘The Ever After‘.

Ford shared that trying to write dance music from a hospital bed might seem odd, but the goal was much simpler: to lift his mood and focus on the positive aspects of life. In that reflective space, his mind turned toward the joy his little eight-year-old son, Frank, brought into the world, reminding him of the path forward.

The process of creation itself was remarkable. Ford managed to create the entire album in just over two weeks while being on a hospital ward between rounds of chemotherapy. He described the experience as both lonely and discombobulating, yet it became a tunnel through which he channeled pure emotion into sound. “All of a sudden I just got into this little tunnel and made the whole record in a couple of weeks,” he recounted.

The album is not just a collection of tracks; it is an exploration of simple truths. ‘Lost In Another World‘ delves into moments of profound realization, focusing on how important the small things are—trees, nature, and fleeting moments shared with loved ones. As Ford put it, he was apologising for not knowing how many of those precious moments they would get in the future.

The tracklist for the album features ten tracks, including the leading single ‘The Ever After‘, alongside pieces such as ‘Overtones‘ and ‘Silver Lining‘. This work serves as a thoughtful follow-up to his 2023 debut, ‘The Hum‘.

James Ellis Ford is already known for his commanding production work with legendary acts including Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur, Pulp, and Fontaines D.C.
