Cwmbran Celtic FC partners with Mogwai & friends for new kits
Football and Fuzz: Cwmbran Celtic FC Teams Up with Indie Icons to Support Grassroots Music
A new era of community spirit has arrived in Cwmbran, as the local football club joins forces with some of the UK’s most beloved independent musical acts for a collaboration that is as vibrant as the music itself. Cwmbran Celtic FC has teamed up with Super Furry Animals, Mogwai, Panic Shack, and Loose Articles to design new kits for the upcoming 2026/27 season, channeling the energy of grassroots culture into a powerful charitable cause.
This exciting partnership isn’t just about fresh apparel; it’s a deliberate move to champion the spaces that nurture independent music. The club will donate ten per cent of the profits from every shirt sold directly to the Music Venue Trust, ensuring that the success of the kits directly fuels support for local venues and artists.
The designs are a visual celebration of the musical community. Super Furry Animals and Panic Shack will feature yellow and blue designs, while Mogwai and Loose Articles will sport striking green and white striped prints, creating a colourful display that reflects the diverse sounds of their shared supporters.
The initiative directly addresses a pressing issue within the arts sector. The Music Venue Trust recently revealed stark figures showing that over half of the UK’s grassroots venues operated without making any profit last year, often surviving on margins as slim as 2.5 per cent. By linking sports and music, Cwmbran Celtic is putting its collective resources towards ensuring these vital community hubs can thrive.
Beyond the charitable contribution, the remaining proceeds are earmarked to benefit the Cwmbran Celtic community itself. This money will support the club’s wide array of activities, including six senior teams, veterans, walking football groups, and a dedicated junior setup for boys and girls, reinforcing the strong social fabric of the area.
The collaboration is built on genuine connection. Super Furry Animal Gruff Rhys shared how serendipitously this began: “Our 50 foot high inflatable bears have a long standing relationship with Cwmbran having been patched up there from many punctures over the last 30 years. The bears were very keen to repay the favour and this beautiful football kit was born.”
This shared philosophy is echoed by those driving the partnership. Joint Commercial Managers Matt Jarrett and Connor Cupples noted that grassroots football and grassroots music venues are fundamentally linked, both relying heavily on local support and passion. They found it a natural fit to connect with bands they already had links with, realizing that these two worlds were fighting the same battle for community survival.
“To have four bands of this calibre on our shirts, and to send a share of every sale to the Music Venue Trust, means this kit stands for far more than a season of football. It’s two grassroots worlds looking out for each other,” Jarrett stated.
The resulting designs showcase this powerful crossover: Super Furry Animals and Panic Shack represent Welsh music, while Mogwai are celebrated Glasgow fans who reportedly jumped at the chance to sponsor the club’s shirts, and Manchester’s Loose Articles bring a strong local tie as their drummer’s mother lives right here in Cwmbran.
This creative synergy highlights how collective action can strengthen communities. By merging the passion of sport with the vitality of music, Cwmbran Celtic FC and its musical allies are proving that when communities support each other, futures—both on the pitch and in the arts—become far brighter.
