Lost In Another World: A Soundtrack For Survival
The music world is buzzing with news from James Ellis Ford, the acclaimed producer known for his work with Arctic Monkeys, Pulp, and Beth Gibbons. Ford has signed to Domino Records and announced the release of his new album, Lost In Another World, slated for August 14th. What makes this release particularly compelling is the extraordinary context surrounding its creation.
This collection of songs wasn’t merely studio work; it was a profound act of resilience. Ford spent over two weeks in early 2025 creating this body of work while navigating the challenging experience of undergoing rounds of chemotherapy following a diagnosis of myeloid leukemia (AML). The album, therefore, emerged from a period of intense medical treatment, transforming a difficult time into a surreal chapter captured on tape.
In reflecting on the process, Ford shared how music served as an essential lifeline. “In April last year, while I was receiving treatment for acute myeloid leukaemia in St. Bart’s hospital, I started making music on the ward in between rounds of chemo,” he recounted. This wasn’t just a hobby; it became a crucial tool for managing the emotional and existential weight of his experience.
He described the creative process as an unfiltered escape: “There was no filter. I just sang the first thing that came into my head into the laptop. It was a pep talk; I was telling myself I was going to be OK. It was one way of dealing with the existential dread I felt. It gave me the ammunition to fight the experience and was a distraction from it.”
The resulting album, Lost In Another World, offers listeners a raw, deeply personal perspective. The lead single, “Overtones,” introduces a beautiful, bucolic synthpop sound that perfectly balances the vulnerability of the experience with a sense of hopeful serenity.
The tracklist features ten tracks, including “Overtones,” “People Just Don’t Know,” and “Homesick For Another World,” painting a vivid emotional landscape. It is an artistic testament to finding beauty and perspective even in the face of immense adversity.
Beyond the recording, Ford is bringing this newly forged sound to live audiences. He has several upcoming dates scheduled, including appearances at the Green Man Festival in Wales, demonstrating that the power of music and spirit continues to thrive, no matter the circumstances.
