Green Hydrogen pushes diesel off the festival bill
Outdoor music festivals are magnificent spectacles, but powering them comes with a hefty environmental cost. To run the complex machinery of massive sound systems, lighting rigs, video walls, and catering operations in remote locations, festivals have traditionally relied on noisy, polluting diesel generators. This reliance clashes increasingly with the industry’s promise to shrink its environmental footprint.
But a quiet revolution is brewing in the world of live events, and the fuel powering the next generation of festivals is proving to be something far cleaner: green hydrogen.
This isn’t just theoretical science; it’s happening on the festival circuit now. Events are actively testing how clean energy can replace the old diesel infrastructure. At the Boomtown Festival in England this August, for example, green-hydrogen fuel cells were deployed to power the massive 20,000-capacity HYDRO XL stage, hosting headliners like Skrillex and Groove Armada.
The experiment continues across the UK. Bristol’s FORWARDS Festival recently used green hydrogen to power its main stage, supported by renewable-energy-charged mobile batteries for site operations. This clean-power trial allowed artists such as Lorde, Little Simz, and Wet Leg to perform, marking a significant step toward reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
This shift is moving beyond just backstage offices. Festivals like Scotland’s HebCelt used locally produced green hydrogen for their Islands Stage in 2022, and the Big Church Festival in the Czech Republic utilized the fuel to power its main stage in 2024, helping to prevent approximately 5.7 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
Other operations are also embracing the change. Latitude used green hydrogen for medical and welfare facilities, merchandise, and VIP camping in 2024, while the Isle of Wight Festival powered artist and crew catering with the clean fuel.
What exactly is green hydrogen? It’s not automatically clean. While most hydrogen is produced using fossil fuels, green hydrogen is made through electrolysis, using renewable electricity from sources like wind or solar to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This hydrogen can then be fed into a fuel cell that generates electricity, producing only water and heat, completely eliminating carbon dioxide and other pollutants at the point of use. Crucially, this system is also significantly quieter than a diesel generator.
While this technology is rapidly gaining traction, it’s not a complete solution. Producing and transporting green hydrogen requires energy, and there are efficiency losses in the conversion process. For shorter, predictable power demands, batteries remain highly efficient. Hydrogen truly shines when an event requires continuous, high-capacity power at a temporary or remote location, acting as a robust replacement for large generators.
The future of sustainable festivals won’t likely be defined by a single miracle technology. Instead, it will be a smart, layered approach: combining permanent grid connections where possible, utilizing batteries for predictable loads, installing solar where practical, and deploying green hydrogen for the heavy-duty, off-grid power needs of the main stages and production areas.
Ultimately, the true innovation lies in better planning. Promoters must first accurately measure how much electricity an event actually consumes. By optimizing energy planning and infrastructure, they can reduce emissions long before any new equipment arrives. And perhaps, the greatest change will be a deeper focus on sustainability that moves beyond visible consumer changes, addressing the powerful machinery beneath the surface.
