Slipknot splits with Sid Wilson
The turbulent world of heavy music continues to make waves, as the hard rock institution Slipknot officially announces its separation from longtime member and keyboardist Sid Wilson. This decision marks the end of Wilson’s nearly three-decade run with the band, which included a formative period spanning the group’s rise to prominence.
Wilson joined the chaotic collective in 1998, just a year before Slipknot released its self-titled debut album. During those formative years, he was an integral and defining presence, lending his distinctive keyboard work and powerful stage presence to the band’s notoriously explosive live shows.
The announcement of the split, which came via a deleted Instagram post stating that Slipknot would no longer be associated with Wilson, immediately raised questions about the reasons behind the change. While some speculated about internal conflicts, official statements remained scarce.
Guitarist Jim Root stepped in to caution fans against jumping to conclusions regarding the departure. He urged listeners to pause and consider the context before forming judgments, emphasizing that there was more to the story than was immediately apparent.
Wilson’s exit adds another significant chapter to Slipknot‘s already dramatic history of personnel changes. The band has endured numerous upheavals, including the departures of Craig Jones in 2023, Chris Fehn in 2019, and the passing of founding members Joey Jordison (2021) and Paul Gray (2020). This continuous flux has shaped the identity of Slipknot over the years.
Wilson’s commitment to the band was as visceral as his performance. He was known for physical dedication, even during the most grueling live performances. In a memorable account from a 2011 interview, Wilson recounted a particularly infamous moment from the Mayhem Festival where he attempted a jump over Paul Gray. Owing to heavy costume elements like leather and chains, he reportedly broke both his heels upon impact.
He recalled the moment with vivid, dramatic detail: “I was jumping over Paul, done it a million times, and for some reason this time I was a little far behind myself and I had on all 30, 40 pounds of leather and chains, kind of a Road Warrior thing,” he shared. “I had done the jump in dress shoes lots of times. I was cocky and I didn’t look at the arena first.”
The physical result was spectacular: “So I jumped and smashed into my heels and broke both of them. Tremendous amount of pain. I finished the show, but I did the rest of the tour in a wheelchair. Some nights I’d end up crawling around on stage, dragging my body around. I looked like a guy from Hellraiser.”
As Slipknot navigates its future, the circumstances surrounding Wilson’s departure remain unaddressed by the remaining members, leaving behind a legacy filled with intense music and unforgettable, if sometimes painful, history.
