Kurt Vile joins Fontaines D.C. on stage for Roman Holiday

The intersection of raw musical talent and unexpected collaboration often creates the most explosive moments in the music world. This was vividly demonstrated recently when Dublin’s Fontaines D.C. brought in Kurt Vile for a standout performance at La Route Du Rock, wrapping up a festival night at Fort de Saint-Père in France.

The energy on stage was palpable, particularly during the performance of ‘Roman Holiday’. The pairing felt less like a simple guest appearance and more like a genuine musical exchange. It’s a story that goes deeper than just hitting the right notes; it touches upon the source of some of their most cherished sounds.

The connection between the two acts is particularly fascinating. Fontaines frontman Grian Chatten has openly shared that the song ‘Roman Holiday’ was substantially inspired by Vile’s work, creating a dynamic where inspiration fuels creation.

This kinship wasn’t limited to the stage; it reflects a wider engagement with music history. The band also utilized the opportunity to showcase their latest material, debuting their recent singles ‘Marianne’ and ‘Six Shot Morning’ during the set, offering fans a taste of their ongoing creative evolution.

Beyond the spotlight performance, Fontaines D.C. was part of a larger musical tapestry. They contributed to the 2021 Velvet Underground tribute album ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’, with the band lending their unique sound—including ‘The Black Angel’s Death Song’—to the project. Meanwhile, Kurt Vile also joined the effort, covering a classic track.

Bassist Conor Deegan III described the connection as powerful, noting that being connected to Vile on such a project was simply “class,” and he even called the resulting track an absolute banger.

This blend of influences highlights the band’s continuous journey. While they enjoyed exploring creative avenues like the standalone single ‘It’s Amazing To Be Young’, they remain focused on their upcoming work, with details emerging about their forthcoming fifth studio album. The ongoing process of writing and creating seems to be an intrinsic part of Fontaines D.C.’s identity.

The band is currently on an exciting trajectory, preparing for a European run through France, Switzerland, and Austria before heading to the Electric Picnic in Ireland on August 30th. This momentum comes after navigating recent personal changes within the group, including the passing of their manager, Trevor Dietz, who was considered the sixth member.

Meanwhile, Kurt Vile has also been actively engaged in his own musical output, having recently released his tenth studio album, ‘Philadelphia’s Been Good To Me’. As Fontaines D.C. continues to navigate the vibrant landscape of independent music, these collaborations and creative pursuits ensure that the story of their sound remains one filled with surprise and excitement.
