Horizon 3 release pushed back
The world of open-world gaming fans is currently engaged in a patient wait, longing for the next epic installment in the acclaimed Horizon Zero Dawn”>Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West”>Horizon Forbidden West saga. Yet, behind the polished graphics and sprawling landscapes of the previous titles, the development pipeline for the next chapter is proving to be anything but straightforward, marked by unexpected pivots and glacial progress.
While the main series moves forward, focus is currently being directed toward rebooting the spin-off, Horizon Hunters Gathering”>Horizon Hunters Gathering. This is where some development challenges have forced a significant restructuring. Reports indicate that the project is undergoing a comprehensive overhaul following disappointing results from private testing earlier this year.
The decision to overhaul the spin-off was driven by the need for a fresh direction. Rather than continuing with its original live-service model, the team is reportedly stripping out that component entirely. The plan is to transform Horizon Hunters Gathering”>Horizon Hunters Gathering into a more traditional cooperative multiplayer game, focusing on a cohesive story mode and a much smaller scope.
This refocusing has understandably slowed down the pace for the main sequel, Horizon 3″>Horizon 3. Because Guerrilla Games has channeled significant resources into reimagining the spin-off, the team working on the main game is currently a “tiny team,” which has pushed the expected release date years into the future.
Meanwhile, the franchise’s cinematic ambitions continue to evolve. Sony’s plan for a live-action adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn”>Horizon Zero Dawn remains on the horizon, currently pencilled in for a release in 2027. This cinematic pursuit follows a recent pivot in strategy.
The shift in the film plan reflects a complex history. While Sony initially explored a collaboration with Netflix, that path was ultimately altered after allegations surfaced regarding the showrunner, Steve Blackman. Though Blackman dismissed the claims as false and outrageous, the incident ultimately led Sony to pivot their strategy in January 2025.
Despite these shifting timelines and development hurdles, the foundation of the Horizon”>Horizon universe remains strong. Fans now await the next great adventure, knowing that the journey to the next chapter, whether in gaming or on screen, is still underway.
