Haim writing their New York-inspired album
The creative engine of the Los Angeles trio, Haim, is running at full throttle. Sisters Danielle, Este, and Alana Haim are not just releasing music; they are constantly in the process of creating, and they are ready to share the insights behind their latest artistic journey.
After the success of their fourth studio record, I Quit, the trio has signaled that their creative process is ongoing. When asked about the status of future material, bassist Este revealed that the Haim business is open for business, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. “We’re always writing, we’re always thinking about what the next thing is going to sound like,” she shared.
While they are deep in the studio, the inspiration for their next project seems to be rooted in life itself. Este suggested that the sisters are taking time to step back and experience life fully before diving into their fifth LP. “I just want to live in it a little bit and experience life,” she explained, reflecting on recent personal milestones.
This search for inspiration led Este to find a profound connection with New York City. Being in the city, reconnecting with old friends, and soaking up the unique energy proved to be a powerful catalyst for new sounds. “I’ve really found New York to be very inspiring,” she noted, describing the flow and energy of the city as profoundly different and invigorating.
The influence of this experience extends beyond music. Este has channeled her creative energy into scoring compelling cinematic projects, including the new film Sunny Dancer alongside Zachary Dawes, Lana Del Rey, and The Last Shadow Puppets. Furthermore, she has contributed music to Netflix series such as Maid and Anyone But You, as well as the movie One Night Only.
The depth of their creative output is also evident in their sister Alana Haim’s involvement in film projects such as The Mastermind, The Drama, and One Battle After Another. This blend of songwriting and cinematic scoring demonstrates a richly layered artistic vision.
Their recent album, I Quit, received thoughtful critical attention, with reviewers noting that it captures a moment at a crossroads in the grieving process, acknowledging that while pain lingers, the music ultimately reflects the warmth of sisterhood and the necessity of growth.
Haim recently celebrated the release of I Quit with a surprise live performance at Glastonbury Festival and subsequently embarked on a UK arena tour. They further expanded their sound by releasing a deluxe edition of the LP, which included a collaboration with Bon Iver on the track Tie You Down.
