The music world is a minefield of intellectual property, but when titans like Beyoncé are involved, the stakes can feel higher than a pop chart. Recently, Parkwood Entertainment, Beyoncé’s label and management company, successfully defended itself in a copyright lawsuit over an iconic sample used in her massive 2022 album Renaissance.
The legal battle centered on the introduction to “Alien Superstar,” a track that famously opens with lyrics lifted from John Holiday’s 1998 song, “Moonraker.” The dispute boiled down to whether Parkwood had properly cleared the sample from Holiday, or if another party, claiming ownership of the original composition, was entitled to royalties.
The core of the claim came from Florida-based Hirose Enterprises LLC. This entity alleged that it owned the copyrights to “Moonraker” and therefore should have been involved in the licensing process for the sample used in “Alien Superstar.” The specific lyrical hook borrowed was: “Please do not be alarmed, remain calm/ Do not attempt to leave the dancefloor/ The DJ booth is conducting a troubleshoot of the entire system.”
Parkwood Entertainment countered that there was no documented paperwork proving the transfer of these rights. They argued that since no such documentation existed regarding the alleged 1998 ownership, they had properly cleared the sample directly from Holiday.
The court ultimately sided with Parkwood, dismissing the lawsuit against them and other associated parties. Judge Mark C. Scarsi made the decision not by examining the complex ownership arguments, but by noting a significant legal flaw: Hirose Enterprises LLC had not been formally established until after the lawsuit was filed. This procedural defect meant that the entity lacked the legal existence required to bring the suit in the first place.
With the case thrown out, Parkwood Entertainment successfully protected its rights, ensuring that their celebrated work remained legally sound and uncontested. While representatives for the various litigants did not immediately comment on the dismissal, the outcome confirms that even in high-profile disputes over musical sampling, procedural clarity is the ultimate deciding factor.
