When a horror game transforms into a cinematic experience, the atmosphere is everything. For Markiplier’s feature film adaptation of the indie horror title Iron Lung, the soundscape is as vital as the visuals. Now, the oppressive, nerve-shredding score that defines this dark journey is heading to vinyl, promising fans a physical piece of the nightmare.
The story begins with Iron Lung itself, a short horror game developed by indie developer David Szymanski, where players pilot a tiny submarine through an ocean of blood on an alien moon. This game set the stage for a cinematic masterpiece, with Markiplier’s film adaptation hitting cinemas and grossing over $50 million on a relatively modest budget of around $4 million.
Behind the chilling visuals lies Andrew Hulshult’s oppressive soundtrack. Hulshult, known for crafting intense sonic worlds in video games like Dusk and Doom: Eternal, delivered a score for Iron Lung that is truly unforgettable. It is a deeply unsettling tapestry of thrumming synth pads, cavernous reverb, and percussion that refuses to let the listener rest from the nightmare.
Hulshult shared that making the score was an immersive experience. He noted that much of the music was written on-location, featuring samples from literal set pieces, buckets of blood, and prosthetics, making the music intrinsically tied to the film’s gruesome reality. He expressed excitement that fans of the film and his music could finally spin this sonic experience on vinyl.
The full score is being released as a 3LP set featuring 48 specially remastered and carefully curated tracks. The release is being handled by Laced Records, offering two distinct editions for collectors. There is a standard black edition available more widely, alongside a limited ‘Blood Ocean’ edition featuring cloudy red and transparent discs.
Both variants of the vinyl come complete with stunning artwork designed by Iron Lung’s creature designer and storyboard artist, Molly Brown, adding another layer of collectible value to this cinematic soundscape. This release confirms that the dark magic of Iron Lung is ready to be experienced in high fidelity, turning a cinematic memory into a tangible artifact.
