Steve Earle and Los Lobos forge ‘Volver A Celaya’

Two titans of Americana music have finally turned a long-standing shared dream into reality. Steve Earle and Los Lobos have teamed up for their first studio collaboration in decades, releasing the new single “Volver A Celaya” via New West Records.

While the pairing felt inevitable, the actual recording journey was a special affair. The two artists, who have spent years sharing festival stages and package tours, finally sat down together in the studio in Richmond, Virginia. The session at Red Amp Studios, produced by saxophonist Steve Berlin, marked the culmination of a long-held desire: creating new music side-by-side.

The connection between Earle and Los Lobos goes back to the very roots of their careers. Earle shared his musical journey with the band from the beginning, sharing countless stages and tours over the years. But recording together was the one piece of the puzzle that remained unchecked until this summer.

The song itself carries an equally unique backstory. Earle penned “Volver A Celaya” during a series of intimate songwriting workshops he led last spring at Brooklyn’s Jalopy Theatre and School of Music. Bringing this deeply personal composition to Los Lobos for the recording session provided a rich foundation for the track.

Fans will have a chance to dive deeper into the shared history with a limited-edition 7-inch vinyl release, scheduled for October 16. This exclusive single features “Volver A Celaya”, paired with Earle’s classic “City of Immigrants,” which originally appeared on his Grammy-winning 2007 album Washington Square Serenade. That track has recently gained renewed attention through a video celebrating the enduring contributions of immigrants to American life.

Both artists continue their relentless touring schedules, demonstrating the enduring vitality of their careers. Earle is currently immersed in his sprawling Fifty-One Years of Songs and Stories tour before heading into Europe. Meanwhile, Los Lobos keeps pace with their five-decade legacy by executing major tours like the Brotherhood Tour alongside Los Lonely Boys, a stop at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, and the 2027 Latin Legends Cruise.

The collaboration serves as a vibrant reminder that even after decades of separate paths, the spirit of Americana—and the power of shared musical history—remains powerfully alive.
