When heavy rock meets beautifully weird, it doesn’t just happen—it explodes. A new supergroup has formed out of the ashes of genre-bending noise, bringing together some of the most delightfully off-kilter talents in alternative music: Melvins, Butthole Surfers, and Mr. Phylzzz.

Meet Gatta Morta, a quartet forged from the minds of Buzz Osborne, JD Pinkus, Coady Willis, and Clinton Jacob. This isn’t just a random collection of musicians; it’s a collision of complementary styles that promised an auditory experience as chaotic and compelling as it is bizarre.

The genesis of Gatta Morta stemmed from a feeling that certain sounds needed to happen. For Osborne, the idea sparked during touring last fall when he realized the synergy between these three artists was undeniable, prompting him to assemble the group. He described the project as a “no-brainer,” driven by the desire to create something equally potent.

The chemistry quickly became apparent. JD Pinkus noted that it had been too long since he had written a heavy album from scratch with such high-calibre players and complementary styles, suggesting the band was only scratching the surface of their potential.

Clinton Jacob, the creative force behind Mr. Phylzzz, shared that he had always felt a connection to the others, eventually realizing his desire to collaborate materialized when he joined Gatta Morta. He described the feeling as an inevitability: “I just had this feeling that one day we would work together.”

The resulting music is a masterclass in controlled mayhem. The band’s sound blends thick, riff-driven heaviness with warped, psychedelic passages, creating material that feels simultaneously familiar and entirely new. As one statement captured their ethos, Coady Willis summarized the band’s mission: “Gatta Morta wages asymmetrical psychedelic warfare in the name of romance.”
