Sydney Arena Reopens as Afterpay Arena
The world of live entertainment just got a whole lot smoother, proving that the next big trend isn’t just about the music—it’s about how we pay for the experience. The Afterpay Arena, formerly known as Qudos Bank Arena, has officially unveiled a stunning physical overhaul and a groundbreaking five-year naming rights partnership, setting a new standard for fan-centric venues.
The official launch ceremony marked the completion of months of interior redesign and technology integration, positioning the venue as Australia’s first major entertainment destination offering comprehensive payment flexibility across the entire fan experience. This monumental transformation was announced in May, officially opening on Thursday, July 23.
At the heart of this innovation is a revolutionary approach to ticketing and commerce. Attendees can now split ticket purchases into four interest-free instalments using Afterpay Pay in 4. Beyond ticketing, the venue has introduced seamless tap-to-pay functionality for food, beverages, and merchandise, powered by 150 Square Registers and 65 Square Handheld devices—a landmark achievement for full Square commerce integration at an arena of this scale in Australia.
The physical revamp itself is as ambitious as the digital technology. The venue boasts a complete transformation, featuring a revitalized foyer, two redesigned hospitality spaces, clear venue-wide wayfinding, and what the companies describe as one of the world’s largest transparent holographic LED installations.
For Afterpay, this partnership extends through 2031, embedding their brand into a space dedicated to unforgettable moments. Anthony Eisen, co-founder of Afterpay, emphasized that they built the venue around keeping fans focused on the experience. “We’ve built everything here around keeping fans in the moment—from the way they buy their ticket to the last song of the night,” he said.
This collaboration goes far beyond simple signage. Peter Loxton, Legends Global COO for Asia Pacific and Middle East, framed the deal as a strategic commitment: “This partnership isn’t just a name on a building. That’s exactly the kind of engaged partner we want beside us for the next five years.”
The rise of this model reflects a larger shift in the entertainment industry. The arena attracts approximately 1.1 million attendees annually and is recognized as one of Billboard’s Top 5 Live Music Venues in 2025. This move signals a broader trend where payment flexibility is increasingly seen by promoters and venues as a powerful lever for driving attendance and increasing per-head spending.
The data backs this claim: research commissioned by Afterpay found that 94% of cost-affected event-goers miss live events due to upfront payment barriers. Conversely, 74% indicated they would spend more at venues that offered flexible payment choices, highlighting a clear demand for smoother financial options in the entertainment sector.
The transformed venue is already buzzing with talent, hosting a lineup featuring major artists including Tame Impala, J. Cole, Khalid, Laufey, Robyn, Olivia Dean, Zara Larsson, and Hilary Duff.
