What happens to a music venue after the music leaves?
Marshall is tackling this question head-on by bringing bands back into spaces that no longer serve as venues. Through his new limited film series, The Dead Venue Sessions, he is resurrecting the ghost scenes left behind by iconic New York spaces like the China Chalet, Philadelphia’s Stalag 13, and Los Angeles’ London Fog.
These former homes have since transformed into unexpected realities—a food court, an arcade, a bodybuilding gym, or a barber shop. Marshall’s project goes beyond mere documentation; it explores the powerful history embedded within these physical spaces.
The premise of the series is beautifully simple: these were not just places where live music happened; they were crucibles where scenes formed, artists honed their craft, and audiences gathered to build genuine community. The transformed rooms themselves become the primary characters in this unfolding story.
The journey begins with the first episode, which follows Bronx Dominican punk band Planta Industrial as they perform and release their new single, “MIA,” in the former China Chalet space. Filmmaker and photographer Cheryl Dunn directed the series, which was created by Marshall with agency Anomaly.
Through these cinematic lenses, the series aims to capture the intangible energy of the past—the echoes of collaboration and shared experience that linger long after the last note fades.
