Super Mario music meets jazz on new vinyl

Bringing the Mushroom Kingdom to the Jazz Club: Super Mario Music Gets a Swing

A collection of beloved video game tunes is ready for a major upgrade, trading 8-bit pixelation for the rich harmonies of jazz. The celebrated Video Game Music Collective has announced the vinyl release of Live From The Mushroom Kingdom, a jazzy tribute to Nintendo’s iconic Super Mario series.

This is more than just a soundtrack; it’s a vibrant, live celebration of the Mushroom Kingdom, performed by a full ensemble featuring trumpet, saxophone, flute, piano, bass, and drums. The project successfully translates familiar, joyful melodies into a wide range of sophisticated jazz styles, offering listeners an experience that is both nostalgic and refreshingly modern.

The tracklist is a masterclass in musical transformation. Tracks like Delfino Plaza swing with driving saxophone lines and energetic rhythms, while other tunes, such as Rainbow Road, slow down into soft, reflective café-style jazz perfect for a quiet afternoon. Flute-led journeys like Rosalina In The Observatory feel bright and adventurous, and tracks like Cosmic Cove Galaxy offer mellow, downtempo arrangements that gently carry the listener forward. The result is a spectrum of sound, transforming iconic game themes into lively, road-trip-ready performances.

The vision behind this effort comes from the Video Game Music Collective, a group founded by trumpet player Max Boiko. This collective is dedicated to bridging the gap between video game music and live performance, focusing on improvisational flair, rich harmonies, and deep respect for the original compositions. Their mission is to translate beloved game worlds into expressive, human performances, emphasizing musicianship and communal energy.

The group has already proven their ability to capture the magic of gaming through their previous work, including the jazz-infused album Live From Pallet Town, which covered the beloved Pokémon material. This new release builds on that success, demonstrating the collective’s unique ability to inject a sophisticated, improvisational layer into the digital world.

Fans of gaming music are already anticipating more such releases. This follows the recent confirmation that the long-running Video Game Music Box series will also receive a greatest hits vinyl release, featuring reworked songs from beloved franchises including The Legend Of Zelda, Mario, and Undertale.

The news underscores a growing trend: the digital worlds we inhabit are inspiring a new generation of musicians eager to explore the boundaries of genre. By taking the infectious melodies of gaming classics and reframing them through the lens of jazz, the Video Game Music Collective is creating a unique, engaging experience that appeals across generations—proving that the history of gaming can indeed be sung in a brand new, unforgettable key.

The Live From The Mushroom Kingdom vinyl is now available to stream on Bandcamp, and pre-orders for the 1LP release are live.
