Poppy struggles for breath in wildfire smoke festival
The roar of a rock festival should be pure exhilaration, but for Poppy, her scheduled performance at the Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was dramatically interrupted by the harsh reality of wildfire smoke.
On Friday night, hazardous air quality conditions turned the outdoor event into a test of endurance. While Poppy was slated to take the stage ahead of fellow artists like Gojira, she ultimately couldn’t join her band for the main set. Instead, she delivered an instrumental performance while wearing respirator masks beneath her usual stage gear.
When asked about her absence, Poppy was candid about the environmental toll. She explained that the air quality made performing unsafe for her and her band.
“Due to ‘hazardous’ AQI reaching 350+ around our set time, I was unable to join my band on stage,” she shared. “I was unable to breathe in those conditions.”
This incident brought into sharp focus the precarious balance between massive live events and unpredictable environmental risks. While Upheaval organizers had assured attendees that the festival would proceed while monitoring air quality, the situation quickly escalated.
The broader region was grappling with severe air pollution; Michigan was under a statewide alert due to elevated fine particulate matter from wildfire smoke. Forecasts indicated hazardous conditions and very unhealthy levels across much of the Lower Peninsula.
Organizers prioritized attendee safety, issuing warnings to fans to pace themselves and look out for one another throughout the event. They noted that available information suggested air quality might improve over time.
This interruption is not an isolated event; it marks the second time Poppy’s set has been cut short due to severe conditions during the festival season, following a similar disruption at Welcome to Rockville in May.
Amidst this temporary pause, Poppy continues to build momentum. Her latest creative output includes her seventh studio album, Empty Hands, which followed her previous work and continued her signature blend of heavy, industrial, and alternative sounds.
Meanwhile, Poppy’s music is making waves across the industry. Her collaborative track “End of You,” featuring Amy Lee of Evanescence and Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox, recently debuted at number one on Billboard’s Hot Hard Rock Songs chart, achieving historic success for women-led acts in rock airplay.
