Poppy missing as band plays in N95s at festival chaos
The atmosphere surrounding the recent Canadian wildfires has cast a long, smoky shadow, impacting air quality across the continent. This harsh reality didn’t just affect landscapes; it disrupted events far from the fire lines, leading to some unexpected performances at festivals.
One of these disruptions occurred at the Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan, which began on Friday, July 17th. While the festival aimed to be a celebration of music and community, the poor air quality presented an unforeseen obstacle for some of the acts.
The situation reached a unique peak when metal-pop star Poppy was unable to attend her scheduled set due to the hazardous conditions. Despite the constraints imposed by the smoky environment, the musical energy didn’t stop. Her band made an appearance nonetheless, opting for an instrumental performance without her presence.
To navigate the challenging air quality while still participating in the festivities, the musicians took an interesting approach. They performed their set wearing N95 masks beneath their regular masks, a quirky yet practical adaptation to the environmental conditions.
