DOMi & JD BECK have always delivered musical chemistry that felt less like collaboration and more like telepathy. Emerging in the early 2020s with nods from heavyweights like Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, and Anderson .Paak, their sound is instantly magnetic—a perfect blend of hyperactive enthusiasm and bone-dry wit. On their sophomore LP for Paak’s Apeshit label through Blue Note, WHO ASKED?, this private conversation becomes increasingly hard to decipher, inviting listeners into a realm where melody and rhythm dance just outside the lines.
If their previous work, NOT TiGHT, felt like an exhilarating demonstration of impossible instrumental skill, WHO ASKED? shifts focus from spectacle to deep composition. The opening track, “ÉPiPHANiE,” sets the tone not with a grand overture, but with fluttering woodwinds and Steve Reich-like piano figures that invite melodies in sideways motion, challenging expectations about how rhythm should behave.
The record masterfully balances these experimental structures with deeply human emotion. Tracks like “GROWiNG OLDER” demonstrate this duality perfectly. It pairs one of the album’s strongest, most lyrical melodies with lyrics that quietly reckon with time’s passage (“days cascading out of sight / younger ways like fleeting light”), all underpinned by a heartbeat-like bass line that reveals surprising emotional directness beneath the rhythmic complexity.
Other cuts offer equally compelling glimpses into their unique vision. “SMALL EYES” is an utterly sincere ode to unconditional animal affection, transforming a delightfully uncool premise into one of the most musically intricate songs ever written about pet love. Meanwhile, “LOVELY MASQUERADE” sharpens into a witty critique of the modern music industry dog and pony show, culminating in a head-spinning final minute driven by distorted synth bass and explosively physical drumming.
The genius of WHO ASKED? lies in its melodic mastery. Despite featuring only three instrumentals compared to ten on their debut, those few showcase dazzling creativity. The track “CONCERTiNO (FOR PiANO, DRUMS & ORCHESTRA)” gleefully ricochets between chamber music and IDM. The closer, “ÉPiLOGUE,” closes the experience with a woodwind-led sprint that feels like a musical portrait of DOMi and JD themselves: playful, impossibly virtuosic, and always chasing the next dazzling left turn.
