Weezer Cuomo painted in gold on Late Night TV
The rock world got a shimmering dose of gold this week as the beloved band Weezer stepped onto The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, bringing a dazzling performance that perfectly captured the spirit of their upcoming release.
Rivers Cuomo and his bandmates took center stage on Wednesday night, setting the scene for the arrival of their new self-titled album, often known as The Gold Album. But this wasn’t just a standard TV appearance; it was a full-blown, sartorial spectacle that turned the evening into a glittering fashion moment.
For their performance, Cuomo went all in, dressing from head to toe in gold. He sported gold trousers, a jacket, a bow tie, and a top hat, complete with makeup that gave him the distinguished, slightly villainous flair of Bond’s Goldfinger. The mood was immediately set by their rendition of the track We Might as Well Be Strangers, delivered with dazzling theatricality.
Beyond the costume, Cuomo remained true to the band’s grounded nature during their chat with Fallon, discussing the creative process that brought the new music to life. When asked about the new record, Cuomo offered a thoughtful perspective on the genesis of their sound. He explained that the music is a product of human connection and vulnerability, emphasizing that it is something that simply cannot be achieved by artificial intelligence or solitary work on a computer.
The creative engine behind the Gold project was fueled by collaboration. After celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album in 2024 with a major tour supported by acts like the Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr., the band entered a focused period of writing and recording. Production duties were handled by Klas Ahlundand and Kenneth Blume (FKA Kenny Beats), adding layers of expertise to the newly minted album.
With the creative work complete, the Gold project is set to officially drop on Friday, August 21st. This marks the 16th studio album in Weezer’s history since their debut in 1994, offering fans another piece of the uniquely Weezer experience.
The excitement doesn’t end there. To celebrate the new release, the band is gearing up for Weezer: The Gathering tour. Cuomo suggested the tour theme involves “summoning sorcerers from all corners of the world,” inviting every kind of Weezer fan to join them in a global rock celebration.
Fans can look forward to this sonic and visual journey as the band prepares to unleash their latest work and embark on a truly magical tour.
