The Avalanches emerge from shadows
When musical giants collide, the result is often something utterly unexpected, yet deeply resonant. The Avalanches are currently keeping the music world buzzing, marked by their latest high-profile collaboration with Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O for the wistful single, “Blue Shadows.”
This new track marks the second creative partnership between the Australian duo and O following their acclaimed work “Dial D For Devotion” from their 2020 album We Will Always Love You. It also represents The Avalanches’ third new release of the year, following recent work like “Every Single Weekend” with Jamie xx and “Together,” featuring Nikki Nair, Jessy Lanza, and Prentiss.
The genesis of “Blue Shadows” is a story as timeless as the music itself. It didn’t spring fully formed; rather, it languished in an old folder until bandmate Tony Di Blasi rediscovered the idea. With the blessing of Claudio Casalini and the estate of Italian composer Celso Valli, the track finally found its voice years later.
Robbie Chater, one of The Avalanches, shared the journey behind the song. He sent the demo to Karen O, curious if she could capture the emotional essence he described as a “peculiar, singular mood.” He admitted that even after months of listening, the resulting recording still amazes him—it sounds as if the song has always existed, carrying an achingly forlorn quality.
Karen O, however, found an immediate connection. Upon receiving the track, she jumped at the chance to collaborate. She embraced the music, noting that The Avalanches’ frequency is high in her world, and she was delighted to be asked to slide into their sound. “We Will Always Love You was a gift to humanity in 2020, and I count it as one of my top 10 forever. I’m so happy to be asked to slide into it,” she said.
While the collaboration highlights the depth of the artists’ connection, The Avalanches are currently back in full motion. After a period spent reflecting on their past successes, the group is preparing for new action, set to return next month for live and DJ sets at additional European festivals.
