  • Trevor Nelson to take break from BBC Radio 2 for medical reasons: “I’m concentrating on getting better”

Trevor Nelson Takes a Health Break from Radio Spotlight

Radio personality and presenter Trevor Nelson has announced he is stepping away from his daily commitments on BBC Radio 2 and 1Xtra to prioritise his health. Following recent medical tests, Nelson has decided to take a necessary period away from the microphone to focus entirely on getting better.

The decision, announced yesterday, June 26, came after Nelson underwent routine checks that prompted him to seek follow-up testing. While he kept the specifics of his diagnosis private, he shared a message with his followers, emphasising the importance of focusing on facts rather than speculation during this time.

“Some of you may already have noticed that I’ve not been on my daily Radio 2 slot this week,” Nelson explained. “After a routine check-up I was advised to have some follow up tests. As a result, I will be taking some further time off. As I’m sure you can appreciate with health issues, it’s important to deal with facts and not speculate.”

Nelson stressed his commitment to recovery, noting that he is currently “concentrating on getting better, being back to 100% me and to getting back behind the mic and the decks.”

The pause in Nelson’s broadcasting schedule comes amidst a notable career. Earlier this year, he was recognised for his extensive work across radio and television, receiving special prizes at the Television and Radio Industries Club (Tric) Awards, along with the Judge’s Special Recognition Award at the ARIAs, and celebrated a significant milestone of 30 years with the BBC.

The news of his break was met with an immediate and heartfelt wave of support from the broadcasting community and fans. Celebrities and fellow artists quickly flooded social media with messages of encouragement, demonstrating Nelson’s deep connections within the music world.

Artists such as Stormzy, Mel B, Beverley Knight, Jools Holland, and Alesha Dixon offered warm wishes, reminding him to listen to his body and take things one step at a time. Singer Beverley Knight noted, “Health. First and always,” while Corinne Bailey Rae encouraged him by saying, “Well done for listening to your body.”

The support extended beyond the music sphere. Vernon Kay paid a personal tribute on his show, expressing his admiration for Nelson’s career and sending well wishes for a quick recovery.

While Nelson is focusing on his health, his listeners remain connected. Next week, Clara Amfo will step in to cover his weekday show, and DJ Spoony will manage the programming from July 6th until further notice. Fans can still catch him live on BBC Radio 2 for special events, such as the Music is Black concert from Hackney Empire on Sunday night.

  • Canada Is Now Eligible for Eurovision

Canada is officially ready to step onto the Eurovision stage. Thanks to recent budget allotments overseen by Mark Carney, the nation has achieved eligibility to enter the annual international music competition.

This exciting development follows a significant institutional milestone: CBC/Radio-Canada has officially become a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), a status they secured following a vote at the EBU’s general assembly in Prague. This move solidifies Canada’s place within the European broadcasting landscape.

With this new standing, Canadian artists and cultural contributions are now eligible to submit an entry for the highly anticipated international contest. However, whether the public broadcaster plans to make that submission remains to be determined.

Spokesperson Leon Mar of CBC/Radio-Canada acknowledged the news, noting a focus on future decisions: “We’ll have more to say about the Eurovision Song Contest later,” he stated.

The excitement surrounding this eligibility is amplified by the history of the contest itself. This year marked the 70th edition of Eurovision, which was famously won by Bulgarian pop star Dara with her infectious hit, Bangaranga.”

Looking ahead, the stage continues to shift. Bulgaria is slated to host the next iteration of the competition in 2027, bringing another chapter to this storied event.

Adding to the spirit of international cooperation, Eurovision director Martin Green has warmly welcomed any participants: “For 70 years, our doors have been open, and we will welcome anyone through those doors who wants to share the values of this wonderful occasion and stand on our stage with friends.”
