Canada is officially ready to step onto the Eurovision stage. Thanks to recent budget allotments overseen by Mark Carney, the nation has achieved eligibility to enter the annual international music competition.
This exciting development follows a significant institutional milestone: CBC/Radio-Canada has officially become a full member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), a status they secured following a vote at the EBU’s general assembly in Prague. This move solidifies Canada’s place within the European broadcasting landscape.
With this new standing, Canadian artists and cultural contributions are now eligible to submit an entry for the highly anticipated international contest. However, whether the public broadcaster plans to make that submission remains to be determined.
Spokesperson Leon Mar of CBC/Radio-Canada acknowledged the news, noting a focus on future decisions: “We’ll have more to say about the Eurovision Song Contest later,” he stated.
The excitement surrounding this eligibility is amplified by the history of the contest itself. This year marked the 70th edition of Eurovision, which was famously won by Bulgarian pop star Dara with her infectious hit, “Bangaranga.”
Looking ahead, the stage continues to shift. Bulgaria is slated to host the next iteration of the competition in 2027, bringing another chapter to this storied event.
Adding to the spirit of international cooperation, Eurovision director Martin Green has warmly welcomed any participants: “For 70 years, our doors have been open, and we will welcome anyone through those doors who wants to share the values of this wonderful occasion and stand on our stage with friends.”
