The Stone Roses Review: Madchester's Defining Debut

9/10 — The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (1989)
Pros
- Anthemic songs
- Squire's guitar
- Danceable groove
Cons
- Limited vocals
- A few lesser songs
Produced by John Leckie, The Stone Roses became the soundtrack of Manchester’s late-1980s scene. It mixes 1960s pop with a funky, loose groove.
What works
‘I Wanna Be Adored’, ‘She Bangs the Drums’ and ‘I Am the Resurrection’ are anthemic, and John Squire’s guitar work is gorgeous. Mani’s bass and Reni’s drumming give the songs a loping, danceable swing.
Where it falters
Ian Brown’s voice is limited, and some of the songs are less distinctive.
Verdict
A glorious, hooky debut.
