Slanted and Enchanted Review: Lo-Fi Slacker Rock Classic

Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted (1992)

9/10 — Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted (1992)

Pros

  • Catchy, jagged songs
  • Wry lyrics
  • Lo-fi charm

Cons

  • Rough sound
  • Sketchy songs

Slanted and Enchanted was recorded on a low budget in Stephen Malkmus’s friend’s studio. It became a landmark of lo-fi indie rock.

What works

‘Summer Babe’, ‘Trigger Cut’ and ‘Here’ are shambolic and catchy, and the guitars are jagged. Malkmus’s wry delivery and nonsensical lyrics give it character.

Where it falters

The lo-fi sound is deliberately rough, and some songs sound like unfinished sketches.

Verdict

A charming, scruffy and influential debut.
