Murmur Review: Mumbled Jangle-Pop Magic

R.E.M. - Murmur (1983)

9/10 — R.E.M. - Murmur (1983)

Pros

  • Chiming guitar sound
  • Mysterious atmosphere
  • 'Radio Free Europe'

Cons

  • Indistinct lyrics
  • Murky mix

Murmur introduced R.E.M. with chiming guitars, shadowy lyrics and Michael Stipe’s mumbled vocals. It was produced by Mitch Easter and Don Dixon.

What works

‘Radio Free Europe’, ‘Talk About the Passion’ and ‘Perfect Circle’ are lovely, and Peter Buck’s arpeggiated guitars are distinctive. The album is atmospheric and subtle, and it set a template for indie rock.

Where it falters

The lyrics are indistinct, and the mix can feel murky.

Verdict

A moody, beautiful debut that rewards close listening.
