Prince’s Purple Rain Hits Broadway Stage with New Creative Vision

The iconic story of Purple Rain is making its way to the Broadway stage, bringing Prince’s timeless music and legendary narrative to a new generation. The musical adaptation is set to premiere at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre, kicking off performances on March 12, 2027.

This theatrical spectacle will feature a masterful score drawn directly from Prince’s catalog, including beloved classics such as When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Take Me with You, and the defining theme of Purple Rain. It promises to be an electrifying experience for audiences ready to celebrate a music legend.

The production is helmed by a fresh creative team, tasked with honouring Prince’s colossal legacy while infusing his music with urgency and vitality. Saheem Ali, known for his work with Buena Vista Social Club, will direct the musical, collaborating with book writer Peter Duchan of Dogfight. The artistic vision also welcomes the return of choreographer Ebony Williams to shape the movement on stage.

Beyond the stage production, the creative process has involved music advisors Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, who worked closely with Prince throughout his career as bandmates and collaborators. Orin Wolf is leading the production as a lead producer, ensuring the final product captures the spirit of the original work.

The musical follows the cinematic plot of Purple Rain, centering on Prince’s journey as “The Kid.” As the film itself established Prince as a masterful songwriter, winning an Academy Award for Best Original Score, the stage adaptation aims to let his voice and music lead the entire production.

Meanwhile, the legendary musician continues to leave behind sonic treasures. In a separate announcement, a compilation album titled Timeless is slated for release. This record will feature ten rare and unreleased tracks from Prince’s four-decade career, carefully curated by the estate. The collection spans recordings made between 1977 and 2016, including the poignant track With This Tear.

Released on August 28 via Legacy Recordings, this project brings a deeper look into Prince’s expansive musical world. It marks a fitting tribute to his enduring influence and the incredible body of work he left behind for fans worldwide.
