Purple Rain Musical Hits Broadway Next Spring

More than four decades after its explosive debut, the legendary story of Purple Rain is officially making its way to the Broadway stage. This major adaptation promises to bring the iconic music and mythology of Prince to a new generation of theatre-goers.

The excitement is building as producers announced that the musical will begin previews on March 12, 2027, at New York’s Majestic Theatre, with an official opening slated for April 12, 2027. This announcement marks a significant milestone, occurring exactly 42 years after the film premiered and just weeks after the iconic soundtrack re-entered the Billboard 200 charts.

The production is based on the original screenplay by Albert Magnoli and William Blinn, centering on The Kid—the gifted yet troubled Minneapolis musician who sits at the heart of Prince’s semi-autobiographical masterpiece. The show will feature an extensive collection of Prince’s catalog, including beloved anthems like When Doves Cry,” Let’s Go Crazy,” I Would Die 4 U,” and the title track, offering a vibrant musical journey for audiences.

The Broadway staging is spearheaded by a dynamic new creative team. Directing the production is Tony Award nominee Saheem Ali, who brings a vision focused on honoring Prince’s legacy while injecting his music with urgent, living energy. The book was written by Peter Duchan, and the choreography is helmed by Emmy Award winner Ebony Williams.

Musical depth is guaranteed through the contributions of Tony Award winner Jason Michael Webb, who handled music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations. Adding to the authenticity are longtime Prince collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, who served as invaluable music advisers, ensuring that the heart of the performance remains rooted in the music itself.

Ali reflects on the endeavor, stating, “Prince was an icon and Purple Rain is iconic; one of the best musical films of my generation. We aim not only to honor the legacy Prince built but to make his timeless music feel urgent and alive, passing it on to the next generation of fans who will make it their own.”

This theatrical adaptation signals a powerful movement to ensure that Prince’s enduring musical legacy resonates across generations. Fans will have the chance to experience the magic of Purple Rain through an unforgettable live performance, and tickets are scheduled to go on sale in September.
