Meg Lui enlists Sufjan Stevens for debut LP

After spending years lending her voice to other artists, Northern California-born singer-songwriter Meg Lui is ready to step into the spotlight with her highly anticipated debut album, Instant Validation. The record is set to release on September 25th via Asthmatic Kitty Records, anchored by the masterful contributions of longtime collaborator Sufjan Stevens, who has produced, engineered, and played nearly every instrument across the project.

The album immediately grabs attention with its preview single, “Elvis Queen.” This track is a vibrant tribute to Lui’s late aunt, transforming feelings of grief into something unexpectedly celebratory. What began as a slow, sentimental ballad evolved dramatically in the final arrangement. Lui explains that because her aunt was such a joyful person and a huge Elvis fan, speeding up the song made sense for it to feel like a party.

Lui credits Stevens with pushing her toward a more adventurous musical direction. She noted that while she had explored traditional Americana or indie molds in the past, working with him encouraged an unrestrained approach. Together, they layered upon layers of sound, creating an expansive and out-of-the-box soundscape for the entire record.

Beyond the infectious energy of the single, Instant Validation dives deep into complex, diary-like songwriting. The album serves as a reflection on love, family, technology, and the uncertainties faced in one’s thirties, all filtered through surreal character narratives—including anthropomorphic flowers, sea monsters, and figures drawn from Greek mythology.

Lui shares that much of her songwriting stems from feeling perpetually stuck, often serving as an internal dialogue about navigating life’s challenges. The ultimate lesson discovered during this process was simple: making things feels good, encouraging listeners to embrace what they want without taking themselves too seriously.
