Meg Lui Unfurls New Soundscape with Sufjan Stevens on Debut Album

Hudson Valley singer-songwriter Meg Lui is making waves, not just with her distinctive voice but with a sonic evolution that blends Americana roots with truly adventurous, unrestrained soundscapes. Following the release of her debut single for Asthmatic Kitty, “Gone Girl,” in February, Lui has now announced plans for her full-length album, Instant Validation, set to arrive on September 25th.

The production behind this new venture is anything but conventional. Lui has teamed up with the legendary Sufjan Stevens for the project, bringing a unique depth and expansive vision to her work that pushes musical boundaries. It is this collaboration that fueled Lui’s creative shift. She reflects on her journey, noting that while she had previously tried to fit into familiar Americana or indie molds, the partnership with Stevens introduced an entirely new perspective.

“In the past I’ve tried to fit into some sort of Americana or indie mold, and it always felt a little flat to me,” Lui shared. “With Sufjan there was so much more out-of-the-box thinking, and we ended up adding layers upon layers that created an unrestrained soundscape for the record.”

The resulting album is a rich tapestry of experience, featuring her debut single “Gone Girl” alongside her cover of The Cranberries’ “Dreams.” Lui has also released additional material, including the single “Elvis Queen,” which offers a delightful glimpse into her personal world. This track, featuring backing vocals from Liam Kazar, was inspired by an anecdote about her aunt—a devoted Elvis fan—leading to a song that transformed from sentimental reflection into a joyful party anthem.

The sonic landscape of Instant Validation is built upon a vibrant ensemble. Lui worked with a talented group of collaborators who helped craft the album’s unique texture, including backing vocals from Hannah Cohen, bass from David Lizmi, alto sax from Sam Evian, drums from Chris Holdridge, production and vocals from Keenan O’Meara, and violin and viola from Olivier Manchon. Sufjan Stevens himself contributed significantly across many of the instrumental layers.

The tracklist for Instant Validation promises a journey through diverse emotional territories, featuring tracks such as “Gone Girl,” “Roadkill,” “Dreams,” and the title track, “Instant Validation,” alongside deeper cuts like “Andromeda” and “Time Thief.” It is an exploration of layered sound, personal history, and musical freedom that sets Meg Lui up as a compelling voice in contemporary songwriting.
