Family Self-Defense Reclusion
The story of Self Defense Family is a perfect example of how some musical projects evolve from fleeting moments into enduring, idiosyncratic forces. Born from the wreckage of the hardcore band End Of The Year, the Albany project quickly established itself as something delightfully unpredictable and art-damaged.
Self Defense Family was never designed to be static; instead, it functioned as a revolving-lineup collective, offering a unique artistic space that primarily served as a de facto solo vehicle for its sole permanent member, Patrick Kindlon. This flexibility allowed the group to embody a raw, shifting energy that captivated listeners.
Kindlon’s musical journey continued with his work on Drug Church, which he began leading around 2013. During this period, Drug Church initially operated as a side project for Self Defense Family, seamlessly blending the two creative endeavors.
Despite the rise of other musical pursuits, Kindlon maintained a deep connection to Self Defense Family, keeping it as his main artistic vehicle even while the group experienced a period of inactivity. The collective remained a central anchor in his creative world, waiting patiently for its next emergence.
And now, after a hiatus, the sounds of Self Defense Family are finally making their way back into the spotlight. The band is officially back, ready to deliver whatever new, compelling material they have been cultivating.
