Self Defense Family drops new music ‘Reclusion’ after 6 years
After a hiatus, post-hardcore collective Self Defense Family is ready to bring new music to the scene. Following a period where frontman Patrick Kindlon focused on his work with Drug Church, the band has finally shared a new song—their first in six years.
The latest track, titled “Reclusion,” offers a glimpse into Kindlon’s current creative headspace. He explains that while he often tries to craft lyrics focused on family and animals rather than the typical themes of atomization and existential angst, the emotional landscape remains deeply connected. “It turns out even my love songs are about being atomized and thinking everyone is crazy. Call it a creative through line, I guess,” Kindlon notes.
This new direction reflects a natural progression in their collaborative process. As longtime bandmates, writing and recording together feels less like a structured task and more like a natural unfolding of shared experience. While previous recordings focused on capturing immediate moments, this time the challenge has shifted: the desire to achieve absolute perfection.
Kindlon admits that striving for flawless lyrics is proving unexpectedly difficult. “I’ve got a family I love, but everyone is dying on me,” he laughs. “I’d like to have lyrics that do it all justice.” This pursuit of precision highlights the tension between raw creative impulse and the desire for polished artistic output.
Despite the internal struggles of refinement, Self Defense Family remains committed to connecting with audiences through live performance. They have a summer schedule lined up, featuring support slots for artists like Fiddlehead. Their tour dates include an appearance in New York City at Warsaw on July 31, alongside a show with Ink & Dagger in Chicago.
Fans can catch these performances and other dates throughout the summer. The collective schedule includes shows in Philadelphia on July 30, New York on July 31, and Chicago on August 20.
