Alex Warren’s slump is costing the Astros
The MLB trade deadline delivered a bit of an unexpected soundtrack as the Toronto Blue Jays traded center fielder Daulton Varsho to the Houston Astros for starting pitcher Spencer Arrighetti and cash considerations. While the major transactional news made headlines, the real story unfolding in the clubhouse involved a rather controversial choice: Varsho’s walk-up song.
This move meant that the bluejays faithful would no longer have to endure Alex Warren’s ballad, “Ordinary,” as Varsho’s official theme tune. The song had sparked debate among fans, who had previously petitioned the outfielder to change it, arguing that the corny tune might be responsible for some of the team’s plate-position woes.
When asked about the request, Varsho maintained his position. He responded firmly that he would not change the song, stating that since his daughter loved it, he was simply putting it out there without making any alterations. It seems in baseball, sometimes personal taste trumps collective preference.
Warren, however, offered a kinder perspective, praising the player instead of the tune, calling Varsho “the man.” This interaction highlighted how quickly a bit of music can become an unexpected focal point in a professional setting.
The musical theme did not end there. With Varsho’s departure, fans were also free from dealing with his recent addition: Austin Blanchfill’s AI-generated worship song, “I RUN TO YOUR LIGHT,” which Varsho had adopted as an alternate walk-up song. It appears the music surrounding the game is just as much a part of the experience as the stats on the scoreboard.
As Varsho transitioned to the Astros organization, he dove right into the new environment. In his first game for Houston, he managed one hit in four plate appearances, suggesting that whether it was “Ordinary” or an AI-generated hymn, Varsho carried his unique personal flair with him to the opposite clubhouse. The trade may have simply meant a change of scenery for the music, if not for the results on the field.
