Z2 CBGB Team’s Illustrated NYC Club History

There are certain places that don’t just hold music; they hold the very DNA of a movement. For decades, the Bowery in downtown New York was the pulsing, gritty heart of the underground rock scene, centered around the legendary club CBGB & OMFUG. Now, the history of that seismic cultural moment is being brought to the page in a way that feels as raw and electric as the music itself.

The music-focused graphic novel publisher Z2 has teamed up with CBGB & OMFUG for an ambitious collaboration, embarking on a project to explore the history of this iconic downtown venue, its influential artists, and the underground movements that flourished under its roof. The resulting book, The Illustrated History of CBGB, is set to be published in 2027, promising to reveal the TRUE stories behind one of rock’s most notorious landmarks.

The narrative will dive deep into the history of the club, examining how it served as a crucible where generations of musicians found their voice and where revolutionary sounds were born. The book promises to trace the venue’s continuing influence, highlighting how CBGB launched massively influential acts such as the Ramones, Blondie, Patti Smith, Talking Heads, and Television before it permanently closed its doors in October 2006.

This approach aligns perfectly with Z2’s mission to transform music history into compelling comic narratives. This commitment to visualizing cultural milestones extends beyond CBGB, as the publisher continues to revive projects like Hello, I’m Johnny Cash, a comic written and financed by Cash, and Farewell to Seasons, a graphic novel featuring Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.

The energy behind this history is currently palpable as the music world prepares for a renewed celebration of the scene. The collaboration coincides with a major event where the spirit of the era is being revived, with the CBGB Festival bringing legendary figures like Morrissey, Patti Smith, Interpol, and the Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter to Under the K Bridge Park.

To mark this special moment, Z2 and CBGB have also released an official CBGB Festival poster, illustrated by HeCreative Studios, available for purchase. The artistic vision is officially available through Z2, ready to bring the electric energy of downtown New York’s rock legacy to new generations of fans.
