Week of Mercury Prize 2026 Fringe events in Newcastle
Newcastle is buzzing with anticipation as the city prepares to host the Mercury Prize 2026 Fringe, promising a week packed with music, culture, and community connection.
The moment the curtain rises on the shortlist—comprising artists like Paul McCartney, JADE, Nia Archives, Dave, Suede, and the compilation War Child ‘Help(2)’, all featured—music lovers are already deep in the excitement.
The ultimate reveal, crowning the winner, is set for October 22 at the Utilita Arena, following last year’s triumph by Sam Fender.
But the celebration doesn’t stop there. Ahead of the main event, Newcastle will host the Mercury Prize 2026 Fringe, an immersive week of more than 30 events scattered across the city, designed to inspire and connect the local music ecosystem.
Highlights of the Fringe schedule promise a rich tapestry of performances. Fans can catch a screening of Sam Fender’s ‘Live At London Stadium’ concert film at Tyneside Cinema, complete with a panel discussion exploring Fender’s journey and creative process.
The cultural offerings extend beyond the cinema. Local talent will shine across the city, with DJ Tommy Caulker hosting a talk at Public House HiFi, and the Grainger Market staging acoustic sets from emerging North East artists on the same day. Adding to the immersive experience, the Mercury Prize-shortlisted jazz and poetry outfit Knats will host an intimate listening party and conversation about their album ‘A Great Day In Newcastle’ at the John Marley Centre.
The enthusiasm for this week of events is palpable among organizers. Dr Jo Twist OBE, CEO of the BPI and an organizer of the Mercury Prize, expressed delight at bringing the Fringe back to Newcastle, emphasizing that the collaboration with partners like Generator and Newcastle City Council has created a bigger and bolder programme than ever before.
“Newcastle is a true music city,” Dr Twist noted, “and we are grateful for its incredible music ecosystem. This Fringe offers the local community an important opportunity to connect, inspire, and create a lasting legacy together.”
Adam MacDonald, project manager for Generator, echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the impact of the inaugural Fringe. “What made it so special was the collective enthusiasm of artists, venues, partners, and audiences across the city. It showed exactly why Newcastle is such a brilliant home for the Mercury Prize.”
The lineup of nominated albums showcases incredible musical diversity, featuring powerhouses like Beatles and Paul McCartney, alongside contemporary stars such as Florence + The Machine, RAYE, and Dave. This year’s winners will join this stellar list, including English Teacher, Little Simz, Arlo Parks, and Wolf Alice.
The decision for the winner will be handled by an esteemed judging panel, including music writer and broadcaster Sophie Williams, The Times’ rock and pop critic Will Hodgkinson, composer and broadcaster AFRODEUTSCHE, and musician Danielle Perry, alongside other influential figures such as Radio 2’s Jamie Cullum and Jeff Smith.
