Recently, this tension became vividly apparent during the ‘Loop‘ tour, where the decision to keep rapper Macklemore on Ed Sheeran’s bill ignited a firestorm over political commentary.
The controversy began when Macklemore delivered an impassioned speech on stage, calling for “all human beings to be treated with dignity, respect, and equality” and specifically advocating for a “free Palestine.” This act immediately drew scrutiny. Calls for his removal from the tour emerged from groups, such as the Israeli-American Council, who argued that Macklemore had used his platform to advance a one-sided political agenda.
Macklemore responded to the critics, defending his stance by asserting that striving for equality should never be controversial. He later claimed that attempts to drop him from the tour were linked to a campaign initiated by Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, against Sheeran.
Ed Sheeran addressed the widespread backlash, stating that he was neither complicit nor responsible for the decision, emphasizing his desire to “build bridges and find a solution” amidst the conflict.
The ripple effect extended beyond the main artists. In solidarity with Macklemore and the people of Palestine, several other musicians and acts chose to withdraw from the tour, including Finneas, Irish acts Aaron Rowe and Beoga, and the Danish band Lukas Graham. Even previous support acts, BIIRD and Myles Smith, issued statements backing Macklemore’s position.
Adding a layer of complex history to the narrative was the involvement of Roger Waters, the celebrated Pink Floyd star. Waters, a long-time supporter of Palestine, weighed in on the dispute, openly backing Macklemore while delivering a pointed comment toward Sheeran, referring to him as a “little prick.”
Waters shared a message on social media that aimed to draw a stark contrast between different types of people. He spoke about those who pursue human rights and others who engage in harmful actions, delivering a harsh judgment on those who stand against universal human rights. This involvement drew further attention to Waters’ own history of political activism, including his past stances on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and his opposition to figures like Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
The confrontation was not limited to the tour. Waters has consistently used his platform to address broader issues, including his reflections on genocide and his direct criticisms of other musicians for their political stances on Israel.
