Wakeman performs for 150 rescued Moon Bears in Vietnam

The Asiatic black bear, often affectionately called the moon bear, faces numerous challenges in its wild habitat. Beyond the natural struggles of survival, these magnificent creatures have unfortunately been entangled in some deeply disturbing historical practices involving their own bodies.

For centuries, the potent bile of the moon bear was utilized in traditional Chinese medicine. Unfortunately, this medicinal use was often accompanied by cruel captivity. Many of these bears were held in torturous conditions in Vietnam and China, where their stomachs were subjected to painful procedures, and bile was extracted using needles.

Thankfully, a significant shift is underway. Vietnam has recently taken a landmark step by banning these inhumane practices. This crucial action paved the way for a remarkable rescue and rehabilitation effort.

As a direct result of these efforts, 150 moon bears have been successfully rescued. These magnificent animals are now receiving a much-needed reprieve and a fresh start. They are currently being rehabilitated in a dedicated bear sanctuary enclosure within Vietnam’s Tam Dao national park.

This sanctuary is not just a place of safety; it is a testament to the power of conservation and compassion. The rescued bears are now enjoying a peaceful environment, far removed from the suffering they endured.

Adding a spectacular flourish to this recovery story, the sanctuary recently hosted an unforgettable event. The rescued moon bears were treated to a private concert performance by the legendary musician Rick Wakeman, bringing an unexpected dose of musical joy to these remarkable animals. It was a truly memorable celebration of life and freedom.
