She recently delivered a stripped-down cover of The Cure’s “High” for the Triple J’s Like a Version series, proving that timeless rock anthems can be reimagined with fresh, youthful energy.
For Grohl, the appeal of the original track lies in its pure, childlike joy. She described “High” as a cute love song, tracing her fascination with the lyrics and imagery back to her early fandom of the band, a connection that blossomed when she first heard tracks like “Friday I’m in Love.” This retrospective look into the late 1980s and early 1990s sound perfectly mirrors the aesthetic she aims to capture in her performances.
She sought to inject a feeling of “teenage crush” into the arrangement, aiming to capture the raw emotion of that era. In 2021, she and her father recorded a cover of X’s “Nausea,” and she also performed alongside legendary musicians like Krist Novoselic and Dave Lombardo on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
