Vince Gill & Charlie Handsome Lead the 2026 NMPA Gala
The Nashville music scene hit a high note this past Thursday as the National Music Publishers’ Association hosted its 8th annual Gold and Platinum Gala. Held at the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, the event celebrated not just massive hits, but the extraordinary songwriters who craft the melodies that define the genre.
The celebration was a true gathering of Nashville’s music industry elite, bringing together songwriters, music publishers, and industry leaders to honor the creative force behind some of country music’s most enduring anthems. NMPA President/CEO David Israelite welcomed attendees, alongside Cara Cunningham and Charlotte Sellmyer, who led the charge in recognizing the talent within the community.
The gala marked a monumental recognition, honoring over 150 songwriters whose country songs have achieved Gold, Platinum, Multi-Platinum, and Diamond or above status, certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) during the recent eligibility period. More than 80 multi-platinum hitmakers from the Nashville area received songwriting plaques, underscoring the sheer depth of success achieved by these artists.
The evening showcased a remarkable collection of hits, spanning recent triumphs and classic classics. The program featured powerhouse performances and celebratory acknowledgments of songs that have cemented their place in music history. For instance, the celebration included the Diamond-certified Morgan Wallen hit “Chasing You,” the 11x Platinum smash “Before He Cheats” by Carrie Underwood, and a string of 12x-Platinum records including Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” Combs’s “Hurricane,” and Wallen’s “Last Night,” along with his 13x-Platinum “Whiskey Glasses.”
A particularly moving moment honored the legacy of songwriting, recognizing the 3x Platinum hit “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” penned by Gordie Sampson, Hillary Lindsey, and the late Brett James. This tribute brought deep emotion to the room, met with a standing ovation from the audience.
The recognition also spotlighted the monumental 15x Platinum anthem, “Beautiful Crazy,” written by Luke Combs, Rob Williford, and Wyatt Durrette, and recorded by Combs. This achievement speaks to the powerful collaborative nature of country music. Songwriter Rob Williford reflected on the relentless pursuit of this passion, noting that he is still “trying to chase this passion of pulling lyric and melody out of thin air,” underscoring the enduring hunger of creative endeavor.
Another celebrated voice was Charlie Handsome, honored as the top songwriter of the year for accumulating 35 new RIAA certifications in the country genre alone, including hits like “Wasted on You,” “Last Night,” “You Proof,” and “Heartless.” Handsome expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the support of his family and writing crew, emphasizing that his success is a collective achievement.
The event also paid tribute to the legacy of Vince Gill, a true songwriter icon whose work has left an indelible mark. Israelite highlighted that Gill’s greatest achievement is that his songs are not only timeless but are actively making history. Gill shared a touching anecdote about how the story of George Jones driving a riding lawn mower to buy alcohol inspired his 1992 song “One More Last Chance,” and he performed his heartfelt rendition of “Go Rest High on That Mountain,” a song he wrote for his brother.
Vince Gill’s reflection on his journey underscored the power of storytelling, noting that while he was known for his singing and guitar playing, it took time for the world to truly recognize him as a profound songwriter. His legacy continues to inspire a new generation to seek the extraordinary in every lyric they write.
