Vancouver’s cultural landscape is gearing up for an unforgettable celebration, as the annual ʔəm̓i ce:p xʷiwəl – Come Toward the Fire Festival prepares to return for its fifth year. This gathering isn’t just a schedule of events; it is a vibrant celebration of Indigenous cultures, creativity, and community, marking one of the most expansive editions yet.

Running from September 18 to 20, the festival will unfold across the Chan Centre and various venues throughout the UBC campus, all situated on unceded Musqueam territory. This convergence of artistic expression provides a powerful platform for sharing the living cultures and rich histories of the region.

This year promises an exciting lineup of talent, introducing Vancouver to rising Indigenous performers LOV, Siibii, Kalyn Fay, and actor/comedian Dallas Goldtooth. They join a diverse group of established artists and creators, including Aysanabee, Logan Staats, Boslen, Coastal Wolf Pack, Burnstick, Francis Baptiste, Miss Christie Lee, Gamksimoon, Curtis Clear Sky and the Constellationz, among others.

Beyond the captivating live music, the festival is designed to be a holistic experience for all attendees. The programming includes enriching film screenings, hands-on workshops, vibrant food trucks, an Indigenous artisan market, opportunities for storytellers and authors, and live mural painting, creating a truly immersive cultural environment.

Organizers view the festival as more than just an event; it is a vital gathering place. Jarrett Martineau, Head Curator at the Chan Centre, shared that the event fosters deep sharing among Indigenous Peoples, families, and performers, emphasizing the belief that joy, learning, and cultural vitality are inseparable elements of this celebration.

Musqueam Chief Wayne Sparrow expressed immense honour in continuing the partnership with the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. He noted that hosting ʔəm̓i ce:p xʷiwəl allows the community to celebrate Indigenous creativity and storytelling while ensuring Indigenous voices are seen, heard, and celebrated across the lands.
