Leaving a legacy in heavy music is one thing; navigating the emotional fallout of a creative split is quite another. Drummer Jay Weinberg, once the rhythmic backbone of the iconic Slipknot, has recently opened up about the profound journey of healing and rediscovery that followed his departure from the band.
When the creative path diverged in 2023, Weinberg described the experience as both heartbreaking and blindsiding. The shift from being part of an established, powerful entity to finding a new footing required navigating a complex emotional landscape. He admitted that this transition felt like being a tangled ball of rusted barbed wire, a heavy weight that needed serious work to untangle.
To address this internal struggle, Weinberg sought the expertise of mental health professionals. This process, he shared, proved to be an unlocking of a door he had tried many keys to open unsuccessfully. Since stepping away from Slipknot, he has channeled his energy into various creative endeavors, joining projects like Suicidal Tendencies and recording with Fuming Mouth. He has also launched his own band, Portraits of an Apparition, and is actively working on solo material, finding renewed space to pursue these projects after achieving new artistic freedom.
Meanwhile, the world of Slipknot continues to evolve. The band recently released a surprise single, Arsenal, marking their first new music in three years and featuring new drummer Eloy Casagrande. Despite mixed reactions online, the track demonstrated a shift, and the group is clearly still evolving, now operating with a different lineup than in previous years.
