Turnstile turns down Metallica tour

The music world is full of powerful connections, but sometimes the most interesting stories emerge from the unexpected intersections of genres. Recently, that intersection shone brightly between the explosive energy of hardcore and the legendary status of heavy metal, specifically between Turnstile and Metallica.

The legendary frontman of Metallica, James Hetfield, recently shared his perspective on the possibility of the two groups touring together, revealing a story of admiration and independent success. While the invitation for a joint tour was declined, Hetfield was incredibly vocal about the quality and impact Turnstile brings to the stage.

Speaking about the offer, Hetfield made it clear that the decision was rooted in Turnstile’s own momentum. He noted that the Baltimore hardcore group was already thriving on its own merits, suggesting that they were doing great work without the need for an external tour.

Despite the refusal, Hetfield’s praise for Turnstile was effusive. He emphasized the undeniable live energy, stating that while many bands sound great on recordings, seeing Turnstile perform live is an entirely different experience. He highlighted the band’s vibe and the palpable connection they forge with their audience.

This appreciation for Turnstile’s live presence is clearly not unique. The connection between the two acts has been recognized publicly before, with Hetfield having recently watched Turnstile perform at Norway’s Tons Of Rock festival alongside Judas Priest’s Rob Halford.

Turnstile’s recent output has only amplified their standing. They released their fourth studio album, ‘Never Enough’ in June 2025, which earned five stars from NME for its “bright, eccentric” sound and its willingness to push hardcore boundaries. The band further showcased their creative flexibility by releasing ‘Never Enough: Versions’, a reimagining featuring collaborations with artists like Elton John, Hayley Williams, and Blood Orange.

The band’s commitment extends beyond music; they have proven their impact by engaging with major causes. Last weekend, Turnstile delivered a massive free concert at the Washington D.C. National Mall, drawing an estimated 60,000 fans to the Washington Monument. This event successfully raised more than $220,000 for humanitarian aid in Palestine, Sudan, and Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the heavy metal scene continues its powerful trajectory. Metallica is currently engaged in their mammoth ‘M72’ world tour, which began in 2023. They are also continuing their highly visible schedule, performing a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas and announcing further North American dates for 2027, including collaborations with Limp Bizkit and Avatar.

The story of Turnstile, fueled by infectious energy and creative reinvention, stands as a testament to the power of independent artistry. Even when major industry figures express admiration, it underscores the incredible journey this dynamic group has undertaken.
