The independent music world is buzzing with activity, offering listeners and fans a packed schedule of shows, tours, and cultural moments. From celebrated collaborators to iconic punk anthems, the current landscape demonstrates a vibrant energy across the country.

A Spotlight on Sound

The scene is currently featuring some major players making waves. Nirosta Steel, the collaborator of Arthur Russell known for crafting some of the year’s most lauded albums, is taking their sound to Chicago. They are joining forces with acts like Kinsella & Pulse, LLC and Tasha’s Hideous Laughter for a dynamic set at The Hideout on September 18.

Meanwhile, River Shook (fka Sarah Shook) remains firmly on the road, enjoying a run through the summer and into the fall. Fans can catch them in New York City at Bleecker Bell on September 24, adding another dose of energy to the city’s music offerings.

For those steeped in punk history, the spirit of rebellion is continuing its journey. The classic 1981 concert film URGH! A Music War is actively touring thanks to the podcast Revolutions Per Movie, bringing the raw energy of the punk, post-punk, and New Wave scenes to new audiences.

The touring calendar also highlights exciting one-off performances. Singer-songwriter Hyd is slated for a unique appearance in Brooklyn, playing with Natalia Catalan at Elsewhere Zone One on September 1.

In the realm of experimental rock, Empty Country, led by Joseph D’Agostino, is set to play a special show in New York City at Pianos on October 3. This indicates that the appetite for new, compelling sounds remains strong.

Meanwhile, the anticipation for major festivals builds as regional events solidify their lineups. Raleigh, North Carolina, is gearing up for the Hopscotch Music Festival in September, which includes a highly anticipated lineup featuring acts like Algernon Cadwallader, Kylesa, Soccer Mommy, and more.

The UK duo MEMORIALS, composed of Verity Susman (Electrelane) and Matthew Simms (Wire, It Hugs Back), are also making their way back to the US. They will be touring ahead of the Hopscotch Fest in September, including a few headline shows along the East Coast.

In Mexico, Mariachi El Bronx is bringing their “You Ése Tour” featuring Bedouin Soundclash and Max Diaz, with an upcoming stop at City Winery in New York on September 25.

Adding to the diversity of the musical landscape is the Dilly Dally Fest 4, scheduled for November 13-15, which promises a mix of talent including Pianos Become the Teeth and Rye Coalition.
