Tour America’s fastest growing indie venues
As the year winds down, it’s a fitting time to look at the pulse of the live music world. While the cultural momentum surrounding live performance has soared, the economic realities facing independent music venues remain a stark reality. Yet, there are bright spots—innovative initiatives working to champion the independent scene, proving that passion, combined with smart digital strategy, can make a significant difference.
To address these challenges, partnerships are key. Bandsintown, in collaboration with the National Independent Venue Association (NIVA), has launched the Live Independent initiative. This effort streamlines the process of finding and supporting independent stages through features, venue searches, and certified badges, making it easier than ever for audiences to discover and support the unique sounds happening across the country.
The power of this connection is impressive. In 2025 alone, Bandsintown generated a staggering 1 billion event recommendations for Live Independent venues, driving 38 million clicks to buy tickets, and securing 2 million RSVPs for events at these independent spaces. It’s a powerful demonstration of how digital platforms can fuel the live music economy.
But beyond the statistics, the true heartbeat of the independent music scene is found in the venues themselves. Looking at the platforms’ performance, we can celebrate the independent music hotspots that continue to grow and thrive.
Here are some of the top independent music venues in terms of follower growth on the platform:
Number 10 is Preservation Hall in New Orleans, Louisiana. This iconic jazz venue on St. Peter Street offers intimate acoustic concerts, preserving the city’s deep traditional jazz heritage across generations.
Climbing the list are some vibrant Chicago spots: Smartbar, a dynamic nightclub on North Clark Street dedicated to global dance music, and Spy Bar, a basement venue on North Franklin Street known for hosting internationally recognized DJs and cutting-edge electronic acts.
From Seattle, we find Barboza, an intimate space nestled within the Neumos complex, offering live music in a space that honors the neighborhood’s industrial history.
Minneapolis hosts the ever-vibrant Icehouse, a destination that successfully blends concerts, food, drinks, comedy, and dancing, serving as a regular gathering place for both musicians and audiences.
In the heart of the action is The Virgil in Los Angeles, a family-owned cocktail bar and entertainment venue that expertly balances live music and DJ sets with a full cocktail and beer selection.
Philadelphia’s Fishtown neighborhood continues to boast incredible venues, including the recently renovated The Barbary, which blends established dance parties with underground house and techno, and Brillobox, a cultural space that hosts everything from DJ parties to spoken word and community events.
Finally, we celebrate Pittsburgh’s diverse lineup, featuring the multi-level entertainment hub Spirit, which combines a restaurant, pizzeria, and rooftop garden bar with live shows, alongside the historic Shubert Theatre, a grand theater in the Theater District.
