The Mothership in the Trenches with Boo

Perched high above the stunning Sangre de Cristo Mountains, where the rugged landscape of the Southern Rockies meets the vibrant arts scene of Taos, New Mexico, lies a venue built on creativity and grit: The Mothership. This isn’t just a place to host a show; it’s a monument to the independent music community, and its success is driven by the tireless efforts of those who manage the beautiful chaos of live music.

At the heart of this operation is Boo Song, the dynamic General Manager, Talent Buyer, and Marketing Director of the venue. With a background rooted in rigorous academic training—a joint Electrical Engineering Honors Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon—Song brings a sharp, analytical mind to the art of music business. But his journey to the stage was paved with an equally diverse portfolio, spanning talent buying for Live Nation, agent work at LA’s Empire Agency, and managing events for cannabis retail chains.

Before landing in Taos, Song honed his skills across the landscape, working with groups like The Soapbox in Wilmington, NC, and founding the Progressive Music Group. This diverse experience equipped him with a deep understanding of the entire music ecosystem—from the initial discovery of talent to the final marketing push.

The Mothership itself is more than just walls and a stage. Constructed by the Earthship Community, the venue sits majestically atop the Hondo Mesa, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. It acts as a vital hub, positioned just miles from the Rio Grande Gorge, perfectly blending the remoteness of the mountains with a rich, accessible energy.

Over the years, this unique setting has become the backdrop for an eclectic roster of acts, including Dead South, Shakey Graves, Thievery Corporation, Midland, Beats Antique, and Los Lonely Boys. The atmosphere is a perfect reflection of the music played within it—energetic, diverse, and deeply connected to the regional spirit.

Day-to-day life at The Mothership is a high-wire act of constant motion. Boo Song’s schedule is a whirlwind of connecting with agents and managers, crafting marketing strategies, managing the finances, and, when necessary, putting out fires on existing shows. He handles everything from staffing and hospitality to managing the bar and brewing operations, effectively running a small enterprise while nurturing a thriving musical community.

To ensure these incredible acts reach their audience, Song employs a sophisticated mix of traditional and modern marketing tools. He leverages everything from Meta and Radio to detailed data from Bandsintown and JamBase, complemented by organic outreach through platforms like Laylo and cross-promotion with the sister restaurant, Taos Mesa Brewing Taproom.

The goal is to capture a broad audience, recognizing that while the community thrives locally, a significant portion of patrons come from regional markets like Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Denver. Song understands that the key to growing the venue’s reach lies in smart, targeted outreach.

Looking ahead, Song identifies geo-targeting as the most promising avenue for future growth. He believes that the next big step for artists and their teams involves investing in high-quality assets—like professional videos and video liners—and utilizing their data to promote shows locally. By equipping artists with better marketing tools and cohesive team strategies, The Mothership is poised not only to celebrate the music of the Southern Rockies but to amplify it for the world.
