Telephone Explosion Records Closes, Inventory on Sale
The sounds of Toronto’s independent music scene are about to experience a major transition. Telephone Explosion Records, an indie label that has nurtured talent for nearly two decades, has announced that it will be winding down its operations at the end of 2026.
After nearly 20 years of releasing music and fostering creative relationships, the label is choosing to close its doors, embracing the idea that change is the only constant in life. This decision marks the end of an era for a group that has played a significant role in the landscape of independent music.
The legacy of Telephone Explosion Records is rich and diverse, built by founders Jon Schouten and Steve Sidoli, both members of the band Teenanger. Over the years, the label has released albums from an incredible roster of artists, including Dorothea Paas, Jane Inc., Bernice, Badge Époque Ensemble, André Ethier, Chandra, Freak Heat Waves, Pantayo, Scott Hardware, and Joseph Shabason, among many others.
Beyond its core releases, the label also supported affiliated initiatives, including the reissue label Morning Trip Records, demonstrating a commitment to expanding the musical ecosystem it helped build.
As the label prepares for its transition, there will be a final, exciting run for its physical stock. Fans will have the opportunity to connect with the music one last time through a series of massive sales. Physical items will be discounted by 25 percent through the label’s website through October 11th. These discounts will ramp up, offering 50 percent off from October 12 to 18, and a spectacular 75 percent off from October 19 to 24.
The closure, scheduled for December 31, 2026, reflects the label’s belief that the relationships formed through music are the true lasting legacy. It is a poignant shift, but one that allows the collective to look toward the future, carrying the beautiful connections they forged with artists and listeners into the next chapter.
