Talking Heads release ‘New Feeling’ with unseen archive material

Talking Heads Unlocks the Vault: New Feeling Book Celebrates Five Decades of Iconic Sound

The legendary rock outfit Talking Heads is finally opening up their archives, releasing New Feeling, their first authorized book that immerses readers in the raw, untold history of their journey. This landmark coffee table book promises a deep dive into the creative process, featuring handwritten lyrics, unseen archive material, early album artwork, and private photographs.

The book serves as a vibrant retrospective, marking a significant milestone: the group is celebrating 50 years since the release of their debut album, ‘Talking Heads: 77’. It traces their path from their foundational training at the Rhode Island School of Design through their meteoric rise to fame playing iconic venues like CBGB, documenting their transformation into a household name.

Authored in collaboration with all four members—David Byrne, Tina Weymouth, Chris Frantz, and Jerry Harrison—the 400-page volume pulls treasures from the deep history of the band. It includes materials that have remained hidden in the archive for decades, offering an intimate glimpse into the creative life behind the music.

The visual narrative of the book mirrors the band’s own storied history, following them through the genesis of their sound and their ascent into global recognition. Furthermore, the book also follows the narrative of their celebrated 1984 concert film, Stop Making Sense.

The announcement of New Feeling comes as the group reflects on their enduring legacy. When asked about the prospect of recreating the feeling of their early days, members offered a candid perspective. Jerry Harrison shared that they were “just savouring the moment” during the period of their reunion, while Chris Frantz noted that attempting to recreate that specific feeling felt like a “fool’s errand.”

This archival project highlights the deep connection between the music, the visual art, and the personal experiences of the musicians. It is a celebration not just of musical achievement, but of the complex, evolving story of four artists who have shaped modern music.

The book is set to be released on May 18, 2027, through Abrams Books, offering fans a tangible piece of the history that continues to captivate and inspire new generations.
