Boardmasters, once a pilgrimage site for music lovers, has been navigating a complex journey of change, vowing to evolve into better neighbours for both visitors and local residents following a series of significant challenges in recent years.
The path to this evolution was marked by controversy. The 2024 edition, while delivering incredible music, was overshadowed by serious concerns regarding safety and crowd management. Attendees reported issues with crowd surges that led to hospitalizations, and the event also saw criminal activity, including eleven arrests related to drug offences, sexual offences, and assault.
These incidents prompted a critical look at how the festival managed large-scale events in the community. Organizers faced immediate scrutiny regarding traffic congestion, with reports noting severe disruption to local roads during the event. In response to these concerns, there was a clear commitment to operational overhaul.
Festival director Rob Spring addressed these issues directly, emphasizing that the past disruptions were unacceptable. He stated that the management of traffic and local engagement needed immediate rectification, leading to the implementation of new protocols designed to ensure future events were far smoother for the surrounding area.
Building on this commitment to safety, major enhancements were introduced for the 2025 edition. These included establishing comprehensive 24/7 security coverage across all campsites, increasing high-visibility patrols, and setting up extensive medical points staffed by A&E doctors, nurses, and paramedics.
The goal was clear: to transform the festival into a demonstrably safer environment. This commitment followed an independent report commissioned to investigate the root causes of previous issues, ensuring that the safety measures implemented for 2025 were rooted in evidence-based improvements.
Beyond physical safety, trust with the local community also required rebuilding. Boardmasters addressed social concerns raised by attendees regarding incidents of spiking at the festival. Organizers provided transparent data, noting a significant reduction in reported spiking cases between 2024 and 2025, demonstrating that their efforts were making a real difference in fostering a respectful atmosphere.
CEO Andrew Topham affirmed the dedication to creating a space where everyone, regardless of age, could enjoy the event safely. He reiterated the festival’s mission to engage with the local community, stating that success lies in acting as good neighbours to Newquay and the surrounding areas.
Looking ahead to the 2026 instalment, organizers are aiming for an atmosphere focused on connection and freedom. They aspire for up to 44,000 people to gather and connect with each other and the artists, cementing the festival’s unique role in bringing national and international attention to Cornwall.
With a dynamic lineup featuring acts like Lily Allen, Kasabian, Fatboy Slim, The Kooks, and more, Boardmasters continues to evolve. The focus now shifts towards leveraging this experience to ensure that future editions are defined by seamless logistics, enhanced safety, and genuine community partnership.
