The life story of Gary Glitter, the infamous British glam rock icon, is a stark and complex narrative defined by immense public fame and deeply troubling legal history.
At 82 years old, the former “Rock and Roll” singer, who was known to the world as Paul Gadd, is currently facing new criminal charges in the United Kingdom. He has been accused of further sexual abuse, adding to a long and painful legal battle that exposes the dark underbelly of his celebrity.
Glitter has a documented history of convictions related to child sexual abuse. In the 1970s, he was previously convicted for sexually abusing three young girls. This historical context is now being re-examined as new allegations surface concerning a fourth victim.
The latest legal action stems from allegations reported in January 2025. London’s Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service have charged Glitter with one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child and three counts of indecent assault, relating to abuse that occurred during that same period at a home in Kensington.
The lead prosecutor, Bethan David, has publicly stated that there is sufficient evidence to pursue these charges, emphasizing that it is in the public interest to bring the case to court. This development follows numerous previous legal proceedings involving Glitter’s history of sexual offenses.
Glitter has been a convicted sex offender since 1999 when he pleaded guilty in the U.K. to possessing child sexual abuse material. His record is extensive, including a conviction in 2006 for sexually abusing two girls aged 10 and 11 in the country, and another high-profile arrest in 2012 as part of “Operation Yewtree,” a massive UK probe into historical child sex abuse.
Despite receiving probation after serving half of his sentence in 2023, Glitter has returned to prison following a breach of the terms of his release. He remains incarcerated at Channings Wood Prison in Devon, England.
