This is the story of how global pop superstar Kylie Minogue inadvertently ignited a political debate in Australia, sparking apologies and sharp commentary from politicians across the aisle.
The controversy emerged when Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was involved in a “shag, marry, date” game on the Bush Deep podcast. During an interview with comedian Nikki Osborne, Albanese nominated Minogue for one of the categories, leading to immediate public and political reaction.
Osborne pushed Albanese to select three celebrities: Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, and Rhonda Burchmore. Despite initial resistance, Albanese ultimately landed on Minogue. The interaction quickly escalated beyond a lighthearted game, drawing criticism regarding the appropriateness of the Prime Minister’s involvement.
The reaction was swift and vocal. Politicians from various parties voiced their disapproval over what they viewed as an inappropriate use of the office. Independent MP Zali Steggall called the remarks entirely inappropriate and suggested Albanese should have pushed back, leading to accusations of sexism. Shadow Minister Sarah Henderson and Liberal frontbencher Andrew Bragg both described the comments as disrespectful to women and beneath the Prime Minister’s office.
In response to the backlash, Albanese’s office quickly issued an apology, acknowledging that the comments were regrettable. Labor minister Tanya Plibersek defended him, emphasizing that being a fan of Kylie Minogue simply placed him in a group with millions of other Australians.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles pointed out that the format of the podcast presented a different dynamic than Albanese’s usual media appearances, noting that this incident contrasted with the government’s established record on gender equality within cabinet and caucus representation.
While the political fallout was immediate, Kylie Minogue’s enduring legacy remains firmly rooted in music history. She is one of the most celebrated artists in Billboard chart history, a career marked by iconic hits and consistent chart dominance.
