Rapper Tyga is diving headfirst into a brand new creative universe with $TARFACE, a project built on the vibrant sounds and cinematic flair of 1980s synth-wave, pop, R&B, funk, and storytelling.
This endeavor isn’t just another single release; it’s an entire alternate persona designed to exist completely outside of his established music catalog, giving the artist complete creative freedom. Tyga sought a space where he could explore nostalgia and high-gloss aesthetic without constraints.
$TARFACE is more than just music. It is a fully realized world inspired by the mythology and visual language of Scarface, weaving an entirely original narrative through a lens of early-1980s Miami excess—think silk tailoring, white suits, nightlife, romance, and pure excess.
The sonic landscape of $TARFACE is deliberately vintage. The 10-track project features tracks like “Lavish” with Fenix Flexin, prioritizing soulful melodies, warm analog synths, pitched vocals, and vintage production techniques. Tyga made a conscious decision to avoid modern drums or mixing, aiming for an authentic sound that feels as if it were released in 1983 rather than borrowing from the decade through a modern filter.
The visual introduction to this new world dropped with the “GAVE U RACKS” music video, which was shot in Los Angeles, immediately establishing the look, mood, and identity of the $TARFACE persona from the very first frame. It sets the stage for the larger story yet to unfold across the project.
The inspiration for this deep dive into the 1980s emerged while Tyga was developing his forthcoming film Baby, You’re a Star. That cinematic vision inspired him to explore the golden era of music—the age of Thriller, Purple Rain, Madonna, and Rick James—culminating in the creation of this entirely separate artistic universe.
Tyga’s career already spans significant territory; born Michael Ray Nguyen-Stevenson in Compton, California, he has accumulated 41 entries on the Billboard Hot 100 across his work. Hits like “Rack City” (which peaked at No. 5) and “Taste” featuring Offset (certified diamond by the RIAA) showcase his established appeal, further cementing his ability to navigate diverse creative landscapes.
